GlucoPlex: Glucosamine with CoFactors for chronic joint complaints.
- GlucoPlex contains an array of ingredients that participate in maintaining connective tissue.
- 'Chondroprotection' is an important new concept in rheumatology, referring to the use of agents that actually build and protect the joint surfaces rather than merely suppressing symptomatic expressions of joint erosion.
- Glucosamine is an amino sugar, and the core building block of mucopolysaccharides, which form a primary component of the ground substance of articular cartilage.
- Glucosamine sulfate is an important precursor of glycosaminoglycans, which are critical constituents of joint tissue. Supplementary glucosamine sulfate may have a positive impact on joint health (Ann Pharmacother 1998;32:580-7).
- Glucosamine sulfate has been shown clinically to enhance the range of motion and comfort of joints in individuals with joint problems (JAMA 2000;283:1469-75, Ann Pharmacother 1998;32:580-7).
- Recent research has shown significant joint protection after three years in subjects taking glucosamine sulfate (Lancet 2001;357:251-6).
- Other supplements containing glucosamine hydrochloride rather than the sulfate salt do not appear to reliably benefit joint health (J Rheumatol 1999;26:2423-30). A recent report suggested that the sulfate portion might be a key factor in the effectiveness of glucosamine sulfate (Metabolism 2001;50:767-70).
- Potassium chloride (KCl) is a more expensive but preferred stabilizer of glucosamine sulfate.
- Glucosamine sulfate and niacinamide have been employed clinically to improve the ranges of motion and comfort of dysfunctional joints.
- Vitamin B3, niacinamide, has a long history of clinical investigation for its effects on improving joint function (J Int Acad Prev Med 1983;Winter:5-25.).
- A recent double-blind trial found niacinamide safe and effective for chronic joint discomfort (Inflamm Res 1996;45:330-34).
- B vitamins have been shown to improve the response of spinal syndromes to therapy and help prevent relapses of spinal pain (Klin Wochenschr 1990;68:107-20, Ann NY Acad Sci 1990;585:54-62).
- Betaine, a natural methyl donor, reduces the effects of excessive fat storage in the liver (Arzneimittelforschung 2000;50:722-7).
- L-methionine protects against hepatotoxicity from certain environmental toxins, according to animal research (Toxicol Lett 1981;8:147-52).
- Boron can increase the levels of hormones that retain calcium in bones, and can reduce urinary excretion of calcium and magnesium (FASEB J 1987;1:394-7).
