Indigestion Formula: Herbal support for gastrointestinal function
- Functional gastrointestinal disorders such as dyspepsia (indigestion) and irritable bowel syndrome are extremely common in Western society.
- Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) is an Ayurvedic medicine found to be as effective as over-the-counter remedies for indigestion symptoms (Ind J Med Res 1982;76(suppl):95-8).
- Chamomile is often added to digestion support formulas for its anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic effects (Z Gastroenterol 2001;39:511-7, J Pediatr 1993;122:650-2).
- Artichoke leaf extract has specific effects on bile production, and has been effective for reducing food-related symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, and flatulence (Phytomedicine 1997;4:370-8).
- Peppermint and caraway oil combinations have been found effective for the relief of indigestion symptoms in controlled clinical trials (Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2000;14:1671-7, Arzneim Forsch 1996;46:1149-1153, Arzneim Forsch 1999;49:925-32).
- Peppermint oil has repeatedly been shown to relax irritable intestinal smooth muscles in controlled clinical trials (Am J Gastroenterol 1998;931131-5, Aliment Pharmacol Ther 1994;8:499-510).
- Wormwood is often combined with carminative herbs such as peppermint and caraway to treat symptoms of indigestion (Phytomedicine 1996;2:285-91).
