Progesterone, the gestational hormone derived primarily from the corpus luteum and secondarily from the adrenal gland, is a precursor hormone which can be converted, as required, into other steroid hormones such as DHEA, estrogen, androstenedione, testosterone, cortisol, and corticosteroids.

Natural progesterone, now referred to as bio-identical progesterone, is structurally the same as progesterone produced in the body. It releases the full range of biologic activity of hormones produced naturally by the body. Transdermal progesterone passes through the skin into capillaries in the underlying fat layer and is passively diffused into the blood stream. Biologically identical progesterone is not associated with any side effects.
