Stress Relief: Synergistic Herbal and Amino Acid formula to support and maintain mood, concentration and positive attitude.
- DL-Phenylalanine (DLPA) is a form of the essential amino acid Phenylalanine that consists of equal parts of the D (synthetic, right hand) form and L (natural, left hand) form. DLPA activates endorphins which are hormones that trigger and intensify the body’s own natural painkilling ability. Preliminary studies suggest the DL- form of Phenylalanine may be helpful for depression. A double-blind study found that DL-Phenylalanine is as effective as Imipramine, a standard antidepressant drug, and that it may take effect much more quickly. This study followed 27 individuals, half of whom received DL-Phenylalanine (150 to 200 mg daily) and the other half Imipramine (100 to 150 mg daily). When they were reevaluated after 30 days, both groups had improved by a statistically equal amount on standard psychological tests. (Beckmann H, Athen D, Olteanu M, et al.; DL-phenylalanine versus imipramine: a double-blind controlled study. Arch Psychiat Nervenkr 1979;227:49–58)
- Clinical studies with St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) extract have demonstrated that this herb helps support normal psychological mood. Extracts of hypericum are more effective than placebo for the treatment of mild to moderately severe depressive disorders. (Linde K, Ramirez G, Mulrow CD, et al.; St John's wort for depression - an overview and meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials. BMJ 1996;313:253-8 and Wong AHC, Smith M, Boon HS, et al.; Herbal remedies in psychiatric practice. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1998;55:1033-44)
- Jujube Seed (Zizyphus jujuba) acts as a calming analgesic that helps support healthy mood. (Huang L, Ye W, Cai B, et al., Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Beijing. A preliminary study on the pharmacology of the compound prescription huangqin tang and its component drugs. [in Chinese] Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi 1990;15:115-7, 128 [[Analyses included] roots of Paeonia lactiflora, Scutellaria baicalensis and Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and the fruit of Ziziphus jujuba [that] showed marked anti-inflammatory effect...antispastic effect...analgesic effect. [Bracketed sections and emphases are those of this author.]])
- California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica), the California State Flower and very distant relative to the opium poppy, is a traditional medicinal plant of the Native Americans. These people used it for its analgesic and sedative properties. Animal study of Eschscholzia californica confirmed these properties and suggested an anxiolytic property also could exist (Rolland, A, et al.; Behavioural Effects of the American Traditional Plant Eschscholzia californica: Sedative and Anxiolytic Properties. Planta Medication 1991;57:212-216).
- In humans, a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Eschscholzia californica, in fixed combination with Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha) and magnesium, found mild to moderate benefit for anxiety disorders. Stating: Anxiolytic phytotherapy may be used as an alternative to pharmaceuticals for the treatment of mild to moderate anxiety without the significant side effects associated with pharmaceuticals. The study compared this alternative to placebo and not to any particular pharmaceutical. (Hanus M, Lafon J, Mathieu M; Double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a fixed combination containing two plant extracts (Crataegus oxyacanta and Eschscholzia californica) and magnesium in mild-to-moderate anxiety disorders. Current Medical Research and Opinion 2004;20:63-71).
- The German Commission E (an expert committee established by the German government in 1978 to evaluate the safety and efficacy of herbs and herbal combinations) lists California poppy as an antispasmodic and sedative. It may also be useful for treating anxiety and depression.
- Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata) compared favorably with oxazepam because it calmed without impairing job performance. (Akhondzadeh S, Naghavi HR, Vazirian M, et al.; Passionflower in the treatment of generalized anxiety: a pilot double-blind randomized controlled trial with oxazepam. J Clin Pharm Ther 2001;26:363–7)
- Passion flower and Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) have traditionally been used and clinically proven to enhance sleep quality. (Wong AHC, Smith M, Boon HS, et al.; Herbal remedies in psychiatric practice. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1998;55:1033-44)

Rhodiola rosea is a popular plant in traditional medical systems in Eastern Europe and Asia with a reputation for stimulating the nervous system, decreasing depression, enhancing work performance, eliminating fatigue, and preventing high altitude sickness. Rhodiola rosea has been categorised as an adaptogen by Russian researchers due to its observed ability to increase resistance to a variety of chemical, biological, and physical stresses. Its claimed benefits include antidepressant, anticancer, cardioprotective, and central nervous system enhancement. Research also indicates great utility in asthenia conditions (decline in work performance, sleep difficulties, poor appetite, irritability, hypertension, headaches, and fatigue) developing subsequent to intense physical or intellectual strain. The adaptogenic, cardiopulmonary protective, and central nervous system activities of Rhodiola rosea have been attributed primarily to its ability to influence levels and activity of monoamines and opioid peptides such as beta-endorphins. (Kelly GS, Associate Editor, Alternative Medicine Review, New Haven, CT. Altern Med Rev 2001;6:293-302)
- Clinical studies show that Golden Root (Rhodiola rosea), an adaptogen, helps physicians on night duty maintain alertness, and motivated medical students preparing for exams. (Darbinyan V, Kteyan A, Panossian A, et al.; Rhodiola rosea in stress induced fatigue - a double blind cross-over study of a standardized extract SHR-5 with a repeated low-dose regimen on the mental performance of healthy physicians during night duty. Biologically active substances [in Rhodiola rosea extract] demonstrate therapeutic effect on the central nervous system by increasing the ability to concentrate, the mental and physical power; they are efficient in the asthenic states and improve general resistance of the cells and the organism against the harmful outer influence. They also prevent the heart system from stress and arrhythmias, and possess some antioxidant activity. Some data confirm that the Rhodiola rosea L. preparations stop the growth of the malignant tumors and metastases in the liver. - Summary: The components of Stress Relief act synergistically to support a patient's innate ability to achieve calm, positive, energetic, and productive attitude. As secondary benefits, it contains herbs that improve the ability of people to cope with stress and pain, enjoy good sleep, and avoid negative responses to hormonal shifts (menstrual, menapausal or andropausal). Its components are non-addictive and, unlike antidepressant medications, are not known to cause adverse effects on sexual function. Though relaxing, this formula will actually tend to improve concentration and maintain mental function.
